  • Location: Dubai, UAE

  • Client: Ellington Properties

  • Site Area: 20,000 sqm

  • Landscape Area: 15,000 sqm

  • Project Type: Mixed-use development; commercial podium (restaurants, retail, beach club) and residential towers

Role & Responsibilities

As the landscape architects for Mercer House, my main responsibilities included:

  • Project Management: Oversaw all landscape architecture phases and led coordination with consultants, ensuring that client, technical, and regulatory requirements were always met.

  • Designing 3D Landscape Elements: Developed conceptual and detailed 3D models for key landscape features like the drop off for the luxury beach pool club and play features were my primary focuses. Utilized Rhino and Revit for schematic and technical design development.

  • Technical Coordination: Directed the technical design for specialized exterior amenity spaces, including pool, play areas, and beach club connections. Collaborated with structural, mechanical, and pool specialists to resolve design challenges, optimize spatial flow, and deliver a cohesive outdoor user experience.

  • Documentation: Produced schematic-level drawings, detail design documentation, and construction-ready plans, using Revit to ensure precision and integration with other disciplines.

  • Complex Element Design: Created and iterated on spatial arrangements for outdoor seating, pathways, child-friendly play areas, and landscape transitions between public and private zones.

Spatial User Experience Strategy

  • Zoning & Flow: The commercial podium was planned for seamless movement between restaurants, retail, and club areas like wayfinding elements, sightlines, and programmed circulation routes optimized user navigation and experience.

  • Amenity Integration: Residential users enjoy direct access to outdoor amenities like pools, landscaped zones, recreational play spaces, designed to foster relaxation, community, and wellness. Connections between residential towers and landscape amenities support both privacy and social engagement.

  • Materiality & Sensory Experience: High-end material selections, lighting schemes, and planting palettes enhance sensory engagement, providing visual interest, shade, and tactile diversity. Attention to microclimate considerations was paramount considering shade structures, wind analysis, cooling features, ensured comfort in Dubai’s harsh environment.

  • Accessibility & Inclusivity: Landscape and play area designs followed universal accessibility principles, supporting inclusive user experiences for families, children, and guests of diverse backgrounds.

  • Sustainability: Integrated native and adaptive plants, efficient irrigation systems, and permeable paving. Designed stormwater management solutions to facilitate sustainable site practices.

Key Technical Features (Pools & Play Areas)

  • Pools: Multi-level pool layouts considering public and private use, connected via terraces and shaded pavilions. Incorporated water features and integrated pool deck lounging with custom designed highlight points for improved marketability.

  • Play Areas: Custom play equipment design which was age-appropriate, shaded canopies, safety surfacing, and flexible-use zones for both resident and guest engagement.

  • Drawings & Models: All technical details, landscape elements, and spatial arrangements were modeled and documented in Revit for design coordination and construction accuracy.

Reflection & Impact

Mercer House provided a foundation for leading complex spatial UX design in Dubai’s high-end real estate context. My expanded expertise in project management, technical coordination, and the integration of 3D design tools enabled the delivery of an elevated landscape experience, bridging the commercial and residential realms through integrated spatial translations, end user based design, and rigorous technical detail.
