VOLZERO TREEHOUSE COMPETITION

RESULT : TOP 50

The theme of the competition was to develop a tree house that had a maximum built up space of 400 sqft. for 2 individuals. There were a few base activities that needed to be made functional, namely:

1. Living Area
2. Sleeping Area for 2
3. Cooking and Dining Area
4. Toilet space
5. Workspace
6. Recreation space

+ Additional spaces (if required)

With this brief provided, we decided to create the space for photographers of the Nordic region, Iceland specifically. We realized that the people usually camp on the ground to capture the aurora borealis spectacle. We thought it would be ideal if they were perched on a tree and get better visual access to the natural wonder.

The form was derived from that of the pinecone, which is indigenous to the area and would seem like a blend to the existing environment. The design was done in such a way that it would morph to a 360 viewing deck when opened but it can be closed to maintain full privacy as well. During the day when the temperatures are higher, we thought it be ideal to avoid converting our structure to a green house structure. A multilevel space was deigned to maximize the internal volume to make the space feel larger than it is as well.
